По сути под словом "облако" в ИТ понимается некое небольшое сообщество аппаратных ресурсов или интернет. "Облачные вычисления" позволяют осуществлять пользователям доступ к их данным без обязательного понимания ими того где хранятся эти данные и как организовано хранение с точки зрения аппаратного и программного обеспечения.
По данным Gartner данное направление основано на комбинации таких технологий как SaaS ( Software as a Service – Программное обеспечение как услуга), на технологии Web 2.0 и на некоторых других интерент-ориентированных инновациях.
"Облачные вычисления" по сути, позволяют аутсорсить вычислительные задачи, освободив тем самым от работы свою ИТ-инфраструктуру, то есть позволяет не иметь таковую в принципе. Данное преимущество особенно актуально для стартапов, которые всегда стремятся максимально сократить издержки. Но не для крупных компаний, mission-critical приложения которых, все же должны располагаться в надежном месте. Пример тому недавние сбои в работе гигантов Amazon и eBay.
"Облачные вычисления" не то же самое, что и "Распределенные вычисления" (Grid computing), которые представляют собой кластер, связанных между собой по средствам интернета компьютеров, для увеличения вычислительной мощности. "Облачные вычисления" как правило, основаны на распределенных децентрализованных вычислительных сетях, и являют собой следующий шаг их развития. Примером успешных "облачные" архитектур, не имеющих централизованной инфраструктуры, является всеми любимый BitTorrent и Skype, а также проект SETI, основанный на добровольном выделении собственных аппаратных ресурсов пользователями для поиска внеземных цивилизаций.
